Below you can find an overview of our biggest moments throughout the history of the Euro-Rijn Group.
In August 1966, the 22-year-old Albert van Ommen Sr. obtained the necessary broker-license that officially entitled him to become a shipbroker for ship cargoes.
In 1974, Albert van Ommen Sr. was approached by the Rotterdam company Centro Mare with the request to transport shipments to Germany via the port of Rotterdam. For this activity the company Centro Rijn Transport was founded.
After a few years, Albert van Ommen Sr. decided to change the way of doing business and started his own company: Scheepvaartonderneming Euro-Rijn (Shipping Company Euro-Rhine). The name refers to the transport of goods in Europe on the Rhine.
After two years of operating from the Hoogstraat, Euro-Rijn moved to the former office of the British Lloyd's bank on the Schiedamse Vest in Rotterdam. In the same year, Euro-Rijn Beheer (Euro-Rijn Management) was founded, the predecessor of Euro-Rijn Group.
In 1983, Euro-Rijn started with the import and distribution of road salt from Italy. The company Eurosalt was founded for this purpose.
To expand sales of salt on the German market, the company Eurosalt Salzhandelgesellschaft was founded in 1985 and then moved from Cologne to Duisburg in 1987.
Euro-Rijn Deutschland (Euro-Rijn Germany) was established in 1990. Initially, it mainly functioned as a local contact point for the German market, but it soon became clear that actual staffing was a requirement for a successful business. A few years later, it had a Managing Director and a number of team members.
Albert van Ommen Jr. joined Euro-Rijn in 1992. Junior proposes to manage and expand the business in Germany and to specialise in the storage of ferro alloys. This leads to the establishment of Euro-Rijn International.
In 1994 a close collaboration with the company Associated Metal Services (AMS) started. AMS is located in Moerdijk and specialises in the storage and processing of ferrous alloys. Euro-Rijn is ambitious and sees a future in the collaboration. As a result, Euro-Rijn is taking an interest in AMS. This will also give the company direct access to its own terminal in Moerdijk.
On December 2, 1996, Euro-Rijn received their first official ISO 9001 certificate. The company has since been ISO 9001 certified.
Eurosalt's business is doing so well that the storage capacity in Rotterdam no longer suffices. The company moved to a brand new storage facility in Moerdijk. Because the ferrous activities also took place here, the headquarters of Euro-Rijn moved from Rotterdam to Moerdijk in the same year.
In 2001, Ard de Keizer joined Euro-Rijn. Initially to support the management with general and legal issues. Later, he took care of the new real estate branch of Euro-Rijn under the name of Kenick Real Estate.
In 2005, the collaboration between Mr Van Ommen and Samir Sharma begins. Samir takes up the challenge to give more shape and content to the temporary employment agency Aldivér (taken over in 2003).
At the age of 65, Albert van Ommen Sr. formally retires from the company. Albert van Ommen Jr. takes over all the shares from his father. In practice, 'senior' remains closely involved for several more years.
In 2011, two major investments were made to expand the transhipment activities. In Moerdijk, an interest was acquired in what would later be called Combined Cargo Terminals (CCT) and in Rotterdam, Bulk Stevedoring Rotterdam (BSR) was established.
In 2013 the company Independent Commodities Logistics (ICL) was founded together with Hans Cleton. As the first company in the Moerdijk region, ICL is recognised by the London Metal Exchange as an LME-certified storage facility for base metals.
Jouke Jelgerhuis Swildens has been involved with Euro-Rijn since 1998. Initially as an external auditor, but at the end of 2016 he officially took a seat on the board of Euro-Rijn Group as CFO.
In 2017, the first 'dedicated' distribution centre for polymers opens its doors, on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. Rotterdam Polymer Hub offers excellent logistics facilities for the growing flow of polymers.
With the establishment of Euro-Rijn XL Logistics B.V., Euro-Rijn enters the retail sector. From a huge distribution centre, thousands of pallets with non-food products are unloaded and loaded every day. One year later, Euro-Rijn XL Logistics Breda B.V. is founded, specialist in logistics for food retailers.
In 2019, the company Flexcraft was sold. With this, a large part of the staffing services business was divested. But at the same time, an interest in the company Staffyou was taken; a young and innovative company that renews the staffing industry with a digital platform.
Euro-Rijn International and Scheepvaartonderneming Euro-Rijn (Shipping Company Euro-Rijn), both part of the Euro-Rijn Group for decades, were merged to a new company with the name of Euro-Rijn Global Logistics B.V.
Euro-Rijn Group strengthens its 3PL activities through collaboration with AWL Moerdijk.
